With the publication of Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2025/1560 of 30 July 2025, the European Commission has formally authorised a new health claim for green kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa ‘Hayward’).
The approved claim states:
“Consumption of green kiwifruit contributes to normal bowel function by increasing stool frequency.”
The authorisation follows a scientific opinion from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), confirming a clear cause-and-effect relationship between green kiwifruit consumption and improved intestinal motility.
According to the Regulation, the claim applies to fresh green kiwifruit — whole or cut — provided that the daily intake is 200 g of edible fruit. The statement may now appear on product labels and marketing materials across the European Union.
Beyond its scientific value, this recognition establishes a new marketing dimension for one of Greece’s most successful export crops. Greek kiwifruit already ranks among the world’s top five in production and export value, with 2023 exports reaching €268 million and forecasts surpassing €350 million for 2025.
The Regulation is seen as a milestone for both European and Mediterranean producers — transforming a natural product into a functional food officially backed by EU science and legislation.
At MediTaste, we view this as a case study of how authenticity, research, and storytelling can converge to elevate agricultural value on the global stage.
